The game started as just a tiny town school activity, but has developed into a pro sport. Basketball has many professional leagues that go around the world. Below is an introduction of the history of basketball.
In the month of December in the year 1891 Physical Education Department Chairman Luther Gulick, from the Highschool for Christian Workers in Massachusetts, collaborated with a teacher about inventing a new sports game. The goal was to develop a winter sport that would help the athletes stay active and happy. James Naismith was the PE teacher that started to think up the guidelines of the new game. Gulick told Naismith that the game would be played using a soccer ball. Naismith took his PE class of 18 men and made 2 groups of 9 players each. Naismith created 13 rules for the game. Naismith had the faculties mutinous man collect two boxes and attached them to the balcony of the posts in the school gymnasium. These were the first basketball nets ever created. The rules were imposed and the first game of basketball was played.
At last, as the years passed, more folks began learning about basketball. More rules started to be added and finally a 3 point line and free throw line were incorporated into the game. As time went on the edges modified to a thin metal outline. The 5 foul rule also was established.
Basketball kept growing through the United States and across the globe. Groups started to form at the YMCA, in the army, and at Varsities. Pro basketball also formed in the early 1890's. As school programs grew so did the professional teams. The sport had many positives. It was extremely affordable for Schools and Colleges as there was no need for a large amount of equipment. The basketball uniformsl were extraordinarily basic, they only consisted of matching shorts and t-shirts, along with sneakers. In the early 1900's a few university basketball conferences were formed and by 1904 there were virtually 100 college basketball teams in the United States. The recognition kept on growing and in 1914 there were 360 School basketball teams.
In 1915 the AAU, NCAA, and YMCA made more rules for the game and started to make more meetings together with tournaments. The popularity kept on growing and in 1937 the first official NCAA contest was created. The pro level was also very popular with the formation of the Easter Basketball League and Metropolitan Basketball League in the 1920's and 30's. At last the Nation's Basketball Association was formed in 1946 and the NBA has been here ever since.
